Every Smith & Wesson has a serial number that's engraved on the barrel, right in front of the trigger guard. These numbers are grouped together in batches, with an alphabetical letter prefixing each batch. For example, all S&Ws with serial numbers beginning with "C" were manufactured in 1997. The key to determining when your gun was made is found by looking at its decoded serial number and matching it up to the list of years listed here. You can use this same technique for other brands, provided the manufacturer does not change the location of the serial number. One additional note: Due to an extensive plant expansion program in 1999, S&W was forced to employ a two-digit suffix following the batch code. Any 1999 model certified by S&W will have a two-letter date code following its serial number. For example, if you have a gun with serial number starting with "C" and ending with "XX", it's a 1998 gun, but if it has a code of "XX9", then it was manufactured in 1999. The letter prefix will tell you when it was made. The letter prefix after the two-digit date code, however, will remain "C" since we know it was made in 1999. The only S&W models that do not follow this convention are: Serial # Prefix Dates: The S&W Model 60 Pro Series pistols were discontinued and replaced by the M&P (Military and Police) pistol in 2005. Your Serial Numbers should be located on the frame under the grips. The frame is serialized to the gun and not interchangeable between models. The actual serial number can be found on the right side of the frame, below the rear sight. The model number is evidenced by the slide legend located above the barrel.
