Gulaal is a 2009 Indian drama film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap. It was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2009, before it was released in India on 16 September 2009. Synopsis: Gulaal is a story that explores the power of cinema and its ability to create, capture and sustain myths that shape public memory. The movie raises pertinent questions about how mankind shapes history through art - from celluloid to silicon chips. Set during the time of the 1947 partition of India, it is a story about passionate people trying to hold on to their ideals in an age of darkness. What happens when politics collides with art? How can democracy be protected in an age of relentless violence? The film was inspired by an anecdote about Kashyap’s grandfather, who was a movie producer in his teenage years. This is how Kashyap explains the premise: "When my grandfather, for instance, made "Blood And Clay" ("Gandaar","Main Course","Naseeb"), which was based on a life story, he did not own any negatives. He had three days between doing the shooting and distributing the film. So, he went from court to court in Lucknow with a projector and a roll of 35mm film. He would show the film with a print in front of him in return for three rupees per person in front of his audience. This is what gave rise to the idea behind the story for Gulaal." Gulaal is set in 1947, when partition was almost upon India. A man returns home from Bombay to his village with a reel of film and an old projector. In an attempt to safeguard the memory of their community lost in partition, they have decided to preserve their lives on celluloid, so that it can be shown again when they reunite someday. However, before long, things turn sour. The once quiet village becomes a battlefield. Friends are split, ideologies are shattered, and ideals are betrayed, as the man becomes the only hope of holding on to their dreams. The film has received positive reviews from critics. "Filmfare" gave four stars out of five and said that ""Gulaal" is a must watch for anyone who wants to understand how cinema can shape lives." The film debuted at Cannes Film Festival in May 2009. It was also screened at the Cairo International Film Festival in December 2009 before it got released in India on 16 September 2009. The theatrical release of Gulaal was limited despite good critical acclaim. "Asian Age" revealed that the film was released in only five screens in India. The film was released on DVD by PVR Pictures on 14 February 2010. The DVD release included English subtitles along with other languages (Hindi, Bengali and Tamil).Anurag Kashyap had initially planned to make an anthology of three films based on partition of India, inspired by the works of Ritwik Ghatak. One of the films was titled "Gulaal", which would be based on partition of Punjab. However, he later decided to make "Gulaal" as a stand-alone film. cfa1e77820
